Tracksuits Buying Guide

Some of the most comfortable clothing items available in the world, tracksuits have been around for quite some time now. They became popular in the 1970s and, even though they have had some ups and downs, they have stayed on the scene one way or another ever since. One thing is for sure, while nonathletic clothes trends appear and disappear, tracksuits, are always going to be worn – even if only for sports events.

Sports tracksuits consist of two parts, a jacket that usually features a front zipper, and trousers. Nowadays we see professional athletes wear them over their competition clothing and take them off before the competition, we see people running or working out in them, and we see them on the streets all the time.

Regardless of whether it’s soccer, athletics, basketball, martial arts, gymnastics, yoga, or even popular dances, both professional and amateur athletes choose to practice in tracksuits. Nevertheless, manufacturers also produce different types of sports tracksuits suitable for different things. So, if you are a soccer player, you could find a quality pair of soccer tracksuits, made with the sport in mind.

But, while their main target is athletes across disciplines, tracksuits have found their way into sport and streetwear fashion trends, as well as pop culture, and these couple of years they’ve had a big comeback. That said, there are many reasons why everyone should have tracksuits in their wardrobe, especially if they are leading an active life, and of course, if they are an athlete.

Benefits of Wearing Tracksuits

Also called warm-um suits or warmups, because they are often worn by athletes to (you guessed it) keep their bodies warmed up, tracksuits offer many advantages when it comes to practising and working out.

A high-quality sports tracksuit’s most important job is to regulate your body temperature. This means that during exercise it is supposed to increase body temperature, whereas, during resting state, it should lower body temperature, regardless of the weather conditions.

When soccer players are out on the field practising their legwork or working or their strength in the middle of summer, soccer tracksuits made of breathable materials help protect them against a heatstroke. Likewise, they protect them from the cold, as well as wind. And while most tracksuits aren’t waterproof, they can reduce the moisture that gets through if it rains. Also, covering your whole body from neck to ankles, tracksuits will also keep those annoying mosquitoes away from the skin and protect wearers against any type of insect bites.

Furthermore, our bodies’ normal response to any physical activity, as well as heat, is to sweat. The materials used to make high-end tracksuits are breathable and they wick away moisture, helping you stay dry. If you choose stretchy and comfortable materials, your tracksuit should also help you with mobility by allowing you to perform your warm-up exercises with ease. This will not only help you feel more comfortable but also help you perform better.

Another great thing about them is that they can help you burn more calories during physical activity. Of course, they don´t work like dietary supplements for athletes or like the workout itself, but they can help people work better and faster. Because they increase your body temperature when you are exercising, your body needs additional energy and it needs to work harder. Of course, don’t forget about hydrating! As you know, regardless of whether you are running in short pants or with a tracksuit, it’s imperative that you take in enough fluids and keep your body hydrated.

Last, but not least, a sports tracksuit will protect your skin from sun damage, keeping you young and healthy. This is because when you are practising outdoors (or even simply walking or sitting), regardless of the season, you are always exposed to the sun and, more importantly, you are exposed to its harmful ultraviolet rays.

Three Important Things to Consider When Buying a Sports Tracksuit

One of the most important things, when you are buying a tracksuit, is the material quality. Tracksuits nowadays are made of blends of quality breathable synthetic materials, such as polyester, materials that contain polypropylene or other fabrics that wick away the sweat. Often, they also feature a mesh interior.

Another popular option for tracksuits materials is cotton, however, it isn’t as moisture-wicking as polyester and can’t regulate temperature that good. So, you may want to wear a cotton tracksuit only during breaks or to keep you warm before you start the physical activity.

Like with any other garment, it’s really important that your tracksuits fit you well. If the trousers are too long, too loose or too tight, for instance, not only can it be uncomfortable and look odd but it can also affect your performance negatively. And, what’s more, it can even be dangerous, as it can provoke an injury if it gets in the way of your movement.

The way your tracksuit looks on you is of course important. Nevertheless, make sure that when you are choosing a tracksuit you don’t only take the visual aspect into consideration (the colour, the patterns), but also what you are going to use them for. You can find tracksuits in different styles, with looser or tighter trousers or jackets, longer or shorter jackets, with or without zippers etc. And some can be more suitable for some activities or sports than others, but it may also come down to your personal preference.

Of course, if you are buying a tracksuit just to serve you as a comfortable garment to wear at home, you don’t need to worry as much about the material’s ability to wick away moisture. But, on the other hand, if you use them for practising soccer or another sport, you should go for a better option like a Kappa trackie or other quality sportswear brand. This way you can be sure that you are getting the quality and features you are looking for.
